Route of the Explorers

These three maps were produced 1835, 1924 and 2023 showing differing depictions and interpretations of the route.

Hansford's map of 1924 shows  detail of the traditional route to Lara. The rivers, mountain ranges and towns as well as nightly camps are depicted.

Lance Pritchard of the Werribee Historical Society has calculated that Werribee was the real termination point of the expedition.

The map above shows his summary of the explorers' route at Port Phillip to their termination point at Werribee.

The Explorers Bike Ride 2024 termination is now at the Werribee Monument  to coincide with Pritchard's calculations and allows the riders to more closely follow the path Hume and Hovell took to reach the sea at Port Phillip.
