This stage covers 5 days of the expedition Nov 18 to Nov 23 during which they navigated the river flats of the Murray, Mitta and Kiewa. They camped at Mungabareena, Lake Hume, Bellbridge, Kiewa River and Osborne Flat on Yackandandah Creek. A boat was constructed from tree saplings and covered with a tarpaulin for the crossings of the Murray and Mitta rivers. The Kiewa River was crossed using a fallen tree as a bridge with the stock swimming across.
On the return journey Hume and Hovell came across a large party of Aboriginal women and children in the Kiewa Valley whom they befriended. The children showed the men their games of hunting skills.
Mr Charles Ebden was the first settler with land including Bonegilla and Mungabareena. In 1834 Mr Paul Huon bought Mungabareena and gave it to his sister Mrs Elizabeth Mitchell whose youngest daughter Emma married Francis Hawdon Hume, youngest brother of Hamilton Hume. Charles Ebden became Auditor-General of Victoria in 1851.
Traditional owners of the lands traversed in this stage are the Wiradjuri, Waveroo and the Dhudhuroa.
